Discipline:

Write, Radio Present

Location:

Edinburgh

ABOUT:

I grew up in council house with a single mother. I studied philosophy in Edinburgh University and realized how ill-equipped in the arts and humanities I was compared to my privately-educated counterparts. I have founded a collective with a fellow working class woman where we reflect on politics and philosophical ideas in our lives. We also both attend regular writing classes and I have some submissions on various topics including health, class and so on. I am putting in the groundwork now to hopefully manage to support myself through my writing in the future; but found myself disadvantaged through university to do so; as i had to work full time as well as study. I am also currently writing a book about my Grandmothers (One a gypsy-traveller & an Immigrant from Ireland in the troubles and how they dealt with similar crises in different ways and the generational trauma left in their wake).

WORKS:

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
