Matthew Dowell

Discipline:

Artist and Researcher

Location:

Sunderland and London

ABOUT:

Matthew Dowell (b.1994, Sunderland, UK) has a research based practice working across the expanded fields of print, performance, and sculpture. He studied Fine Art at Kingston School of Art (2013-16) and Print at the Royal College of Art (2018-2020). His work responds to specific sites and objects, adopting anthropological models of working by exploring social histories, collecting and recording signifiers of place: signs, mapping and ephemera. Through the building of these informal archives of objects, images and information the work centers itself in these histories as sites for exchange and a contemporary exploration of the placemaking.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
