Discipline:

Multidisciplinary Artist, Curator & Crafter

Location:

Leeds

ABOUT:

Self-taught, queer artist from North Lincolnshire living in Leeds

Most recently my work has expanded from digital painting to found-object sculpture and photography, where I like to play with the parameters and contradictions surrounding concepts such as worth, British heritage and class struggle. Much of my work comes from my identity of growing up around one of Britain's economically deprived steel towns, where I try to evidence the uncomfortableness of clashing what is known to be fine art together with concepts of social class, gender and sexuality, and push this to the forefront in the final piece. I often create as a therapeutic exercise to make that unease palatable to view, but never completely gone.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
