Shaanthi Rajah

Discipline:

Artist

Location:

London & Hong Kong

ABOUT:

Shaanthi Rajah’s practice is an expression of nostalgia, explored by creating playful sculptures that reference her childhood and mixed-cultural identity as a ‘third culture kid’. These elements of identity are sources of inspiration within multiple aspects of her practice, with challenges in her work rooted in how best to translate and communicate these into accessible physical formats.

Through a light-hearted interpretation of materials she also endeavours to question the language expressed through sculpture, and the ‘worth’ of everyday items when weighted against nostalgic value. Her sculptures reference urban structures and environments, which appear ‘ready-for-use’ and are suggestive of action and functionality, but have no intrinsic purpose and are subversive of any intention.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
