ABOUT:

I’m Gem, a queer visual artist from Essex, working in London. I make work about devotion, and the various ways it shows up in my life. I’ve always said my mum taught me about religion when she raised me Catholic, and my dad taught me about faith when he raised me an Arsenal fan. I am interested in the intersections of Faith and my identity, being someone who was raised Catholic, my practice is somewhere that I process and digest my upbringing and what it has meant for me as a queer person, the good the bad and the ugly.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
