Gwennan Thomas

Discipline:

Artist (Painter)

Location:

London

ABOUT:

My practice is studio-based and process driven, working primarily with painting which sits somewhere between abstraction and figuration. The work explores fluidity in the context of memory, bicultural identity and language. I paint on a variety of surfaces; wood, calico, satin, polyester, cotton duck and often make my own paints, building a body of research on materiality and the tactile. I am interested in showing works in alternative formats and often play with how works are shown, hung or grouped together. The paintings have a strong focus on colour and use framing mechanisms and repetitive motifs derived from film scenes, the built environment, collected objects and Celtic mythology.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
