ABOUT:

My practice and research incorporate the relationship between photography, feminism, and yarn as well as process of intervening in the material structure of a photograph.
I create photo-embroideries and photo-quilts using photographs and yarn where each are unique, hand quilted and embroidered.
My work connects three fields I’m passionate about: photography, textile craft, and feminism.
Photography and thread each have their own burden and connotations with which they impregnate the photo-embroidery. Thread is tactile and haptic, while photography elevates the visual, the optical, and emphasises the content.
Photography is rooted in technology, while working with thread owes more to traditions of craft, with strong connections to women.
I see feminism in my work, as a clip that holds the thread and photography together.
Feminism perceived, apart from philosophical references, as an everyday experience of the social role of a woman, a mother and caregiver.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
