ABOUT:
Asia Nowicki is a London-born, Brighton-based artist whose practice is grounded in neurodiverse perception and non-linear cognition. Working through sculpture and performative extension, she interrogates how bodies absorb pressure, expectation, and rupture. Her work operates in the space where thought becomes physical compressed, distorted, and forced to surface.
Using a combination of traditional sculptural methods and improvised, industrial materials, Asia produces forms that feel worn, strained, and exposed. These objects do not aim to comfort. They carry the marks of repetition, intrusion, and use -registering trauma as something embedded rather than resolved. Bodily sites associated with care, reproduction, and intimacy are isolated, enlarged, and stripped of sentimentality, taking on an uneasy autonomy.
Her practice frequently extends into performance, with the artist inserting herself into the work or animating fragments of the body that behave independently. These parts become darkly charged presences: confrontational, grotesque, and laced with a dry, sometimes brutal humour. Laughter emerges not as relief, but as a coping mechanism- an edge that sharpens the work rather than softens it.
For Asia, art is a tool for survival rather than healing: a way to externalise internal pressure, resist bodily obedience, and expose what is usually hidden, managed, or disciplined into silence.
