Photographer, Graphic Designer, Content Creator, Musician.

Location:

Leeds

ABOUT:

I’m Char. Initially from Huddersfield but I’ve lived in Leeds for nearly a decade. My work revolves around capturing diy/grassroots music scenes, independent artists and events. I mainly do abstract and b&w photography, vintage camcorder stuff and graphic design.

I’m proudly and fiercely working class, neurodivergent and queer. I source empowerment from my identity as a form of rebellion I guess, cos when you’re growing up within systems that aren’t built for you, you’re directly discouraged, misunderstood, judged and underestimated. It’s easy to internalise shame, anger and self doubt from it, but it’s also really powerful to have a ‘fuck that’ attitude and to exist out of spite really.

Outside of my photography bits I’m a Community Development Worker specialising in LGBTQ+ mental well-being and neurodivergence. It’s fab and I love that I’m able to use my experiences to help people. I’m also in a gorgeous indie/shoegaze/dream pop band called Hinata, I play bass and sing alongside my long term partner and besties. We’ve been a band since 2021 and released 3 ep’s and an album diy and independently.

My hopes for the future as a creator are to step out of my comfort zone of music and events and instead do a project around capturing community diversity and identity, I’d also like to do more film work, mixed media and exhibition type stuff.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
