ABOUT:

ARTIST STATEMENT CHRIS HAGAN

I am a contemporary visual artist based in East Sussex. I began my practice in 2017, producing abstract figurative and landscape-based works on canvas, paper and mixed media. My works have been exhibited in the UK and are held in private collections worldwide including Germany, France, Spain the United States, Canada and Asia.

Found imagery and the stories of the people, places, landscapes and historical events of the North of England, Wales and in particular Ireland from the 1900’s onwards often inform elements of my work, connecting the links of my own Irish/Northern English heritage and exploring through visual means the path of historical and modern life through long-standing traditions, folklore and memory.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
