ABOUT:

Emily bottomer (b.1997) is a London based artist from Derby. Bottomer studied her BA (Hons) Fine Art at Derby University (2021) and is currently studying towards her MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins (2025).
Stemming from her childhood, Bottomer enjoys working with humble and accessible materials like acrylic paint, graphite, and charcoal to produce large scale abstract drawings and paintings that aim to express the working-class female experience.
Concerned with labour, dirt, class, and morality, Bottomer combines laborious techniques, automatism, and repetition to explore her thoughts and feelings. Allowing feeling and intuition to guide her practice and lead her to make work that she deems important and necessary. Bottomer enjoys the visceral experience of mark making and gestural abstraction to explore and express her differing emotional states both past and present.
Currently faced with art world elitism after recently relocating to London, Bottomers current practice investigates working-class culture and the lack thereof in the current discourse. Drawing inspiration from personal and familial histories and culture she is currently focusing on ideas of infiltration and graft. Though her works are semi-autobiographical, she hopes that they inspire a universal sense of understanding through shared experiences.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
