Isles

Discipline:

Photography, Performance Art, Projection, Sound, Movement

Location:

London, UK

ABOUT:

Isles is a self-taught visual artist working primarily with abstract photography, mark-making and movement. Drawing on their relationship with nature and elemental beings, Isles often revisits key motifs and themes within their work including light, shadow, fluidity and reflection. Over the last decade, their practice has been influenced by animism and the mystical nature of the everyday - revealing what is alive and in motion beneath the concrete of the city and how nature is murmuring in the background of the everyday.

London-born and raised, their work explores the important searching for peace within urban environments and the uncertain nature of these times. Living with chronic mental health conditions, Isles is most interested in how to go beyond the chaos of the mind by using presence and abstraction to access new realities and alter the perception of time. Through the act of making art, Isles seeks to remind both themselves and others that personal and collective liberation still remains possible, despite the darkness of these times.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
