Jemma Shearer

Discipline:

Multidisciplinary Artist

Location:

Glasgow

ABOUT:

Jem Shearer is an interdisciplinary Glasgow-based artist working across movement, sound, and installation.

Emerging from grief, endurance, failure and futurity, their practice traces fragments of dreams, gestures, hauntings and digital residues to conjure queer technologies of survival. Using decay, distortion, noise and repetition, they construct speculative environments from found materials and automatic practices that infect heteronormative modes of thought, form, space and death. Their work lives in the space between clarity and collapse, unearthing a queer past as a method for contaminating the present (and future) through speculative, diasporic and technological means.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
