Discipline:

Choreographer, Movement Director, Facilitator, Performer, Producer

Location:

East Kent & London

ABOUT:

Jodie Cole is a working-class independent movement artist. She’s a choreographer, movement director, facilitator, and performer and she is Weston Jerwood Creative Fellow at the UK's leading integrated circus company, Extraordinary Bodies.

Jodie creates joyful spaces for everyone to be part of, she is an agent for change, an inhibition loosener, a movement “sponteneyaniser”, and she brings performance to unexpected places.

Inspired by the healing powers of movement and social divides, she celebrates difference and uses movement to unite experience. Audiences leave saying “she made me want to see more” (Sarah Crompton, The Telegraph), and “Transforms you into a dance polymath ina twinkling” (Lyn Gardner).

As an inclusive researcher and practitioner of movement and dance, she also works in the community and has extensive experience teaching in SEND settings (special educational needs and disabilities). She mentors dance facilitators at the Royal Academy of Dance, and she is an MA Movement: Directing and Teaching graduate (Royal Central School of Speech & Drama). She currently runs workshops and movement sessions for institutions across the UK, and she is trained to level 2 British Sign Language.

She is especially interested in the raucous joy of movement, the potential for full-bodied expression, and inclusive practice.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
