Mark Adams

Discipline:

Photography

Location:

Newcastle

ABOUT:

Mark Adams’ photographic practice and research is concerned with landscape representation as a means of investigating cultural and environmental forces which impact on the environment. His film-based photographs are made during extended walks, which frequently focus on the disregarded, indeterminate and transitory spaces with a recurring focus on post-industrial legacies.

Adams’ practice evolves from an interest in photography’s empirical and suggestive qualities, the inherent tensions and contradictions between the medium as an indexical record and its allegorical potential. The use of analogue materials engages the viewer in encounters with the materiality of landscapes, architecture and the physicality of experiences. By establishing a generative ongoing dialogue between walking and making, Adams aims to develop an authentic experience of places with multi-layered histories and ecological challenges.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
