Queenie Whitaker Mellor

Discipline:

Artist

Location:

Cornwall, UK.

ABOUT:

Queenie Mellor is an artist working with material, memory, and class resistance. Her practice is rooted in working-class history and personal ancestry—particularly the stories that get erased or rewritten by systems of power. She builds work from the ground up: using what’s available, what’s inherited, and what still hums in the bones.

Her projects often explore the weight of family, land, protest, and grief—not as concepts, but as lived textures. She isn’t interested in fitting into the art world’s poshness or polish. Her work doesn’t perform rage or history, it carries it. And she’s building a practice that refuses to bend.

Queenie is currently developing THE GATHERING, a major sculptural project tracing her ancestor George Mellor—a Luddite—and the landscapes that shaped him. She works in sculpture, installation, and whatever materials speak the loudest. She lives and works in Cornwall.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
