Simon James Houlton

Discipline:

Novelist, Painter, Poet

Location:

Eskisehir

ABOUT:

I am a self-taught painter and writer from Hastings, England, currently in Turkey. My practice is rooted in direct, unpolished expression: bold black lines, scratches, splashes, and faces that often function as self-portraits of doubt, isolation, and survival. I return again and again to themes of hidden human struggle, which are explored in all mediums that I work with.

After a twenty-year hiatus from art, I have exhibited work in two solo shows and continue to develop my painting in a makeshift, unheated studio. Financial limitations have often shaped my practice, from working under poor light in freezing conditions to stretching scarce materials, and more recently pushing me to explore poetry (it's cheaper) with the same obsessive energy I once reserved for paint.

Alongside painting, I am the author of the novel The Night Swimmer (2025) and I am currently preparing a debut poetry chapbook that, like my visual work, is concerned with isolation, working-class life, and the incessant noise in my head that compels me to create.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
