Zivarna Murphy

Discipline:

Ceramics, Research

Location:

Hull

ABOUT:

Zivarna is a research-based ceramic artist. She hand forms textured vessels inspired by the cliffs and beaches along the rugged eroding Yorkshire coastline where she lives. She impresses beach treasures such as rocks, fossils and shells to texture her vessels and wearable offcuts (jewellery & brooches). Zivarna also uses wild clay found and reclaimed from her favourite beach in some of her pieces. Her pieces are thus imbued with a strong sense of place and connection to the natural organic landscapes surrounding her and are rooted in the erosion and loss of this landscape. She uses various processes to fire the vessels including smoke-firing and raku.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
