ABOUT:

I am a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Graduating from Newcastle University in 2018, my practice comprises sculpture, painting and installation, but working imaginatively to discover the sculptural potential of paper is central to much of my work. Sometimes these explorations in paper translate into working in other mediums such as ceramics and textiles.
My sculptural practice is led by a unique process that I’ve developed since graduating in 2018. The process involves folding and cutting paper, I then bend, shape and warp the sheet into a sculptural form. I’m interested in how this engages my subconscious mind in a combination of accident and instinct that allows me to react to the surprising and ambiguous forms that emerge. Once formed I like to imagine the sculptures as bodies, held down and cajoled into position by delicately placed pins. There exists a tension and resistance and a sense that the works want to spring back into their usual state of flatness. I’m interested in how this process amounts to a kind-of objectification, exploring ideas around control and subjectivity.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
