Andrea Mindel

Discipline:

Interdisciplinary Artist

Location:

RODMELL EAST SUSSEX

ABOUT:

With a particular interest in embroidery, Andrea uses elements of performance, ceramic and assemblage sculpture, film and textiles to address the enduring impacts of colonialism, the live-streaming of genocide, the existential realities of climate change, and the ongoing struggles for disability rights, gender equality, and racial justice.

By engaging in creating as a form of stimming, and with non-performative creation in public spaces, Andrea addresses these environments in the context of dis/ability, reclaiming these spaces, transforming them into arenas of expression and resistance.

Recently turning to ceramic sculpture, Andrea juxtaposes the delicacy of antique linen and the biting embroidered words embedded in it with nonsensical, non-functional glazed vessels creating a shocking sense of bathos. Channelling anger, with needle and clay is Andrea’s radical act of resistance.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
