Discipline:

Photographer, mixed media artist

Location:

Glasgow, Scotland

ABOUT:

My name is Dee aka elegia. I use she/her pronouns.

I grew up in a wee seaside town in North Ayrshire. In my late teens and early twenties, I went on to study various creative practices such as Fine Art, poetry and creative writing. Eventually finding my way back to all things artistic when I fell into modelling in 2011-ish, which kickstarted my interest in picking up a camera. I work with analog and mixed media. My work is very much inspired by my working class background, namely the architecture, cinema and music that has been made by those of us who grew up in these towns and neighbourhoods. I also have AuDHD (ADHD & autism), OCD and dyspraxia, which understandably greatly influence my work too. I’ve created many self-portrait projects exploring my experience of living with these.

I’ve been lucky to have had my work exhibited and published internationally. The power of seeing and feeling my images in print and/or hung up on a wall is one of my primary motivations. I think it’s so important for visual arts to exist and be enjoyed tangibly. There’s just nothing else quite like it.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
