ABOUT:

My practice exists within the realms of sculpture, writing, moving image and installation. The work identifies objects that evoke personal and collective nostalgia within the context of British culture, whilst critical of how these might be romanticised. I am fascinated by social constructs such as happiness and hope and how these are understood and experienced through class and upbringing. It’s interesting to consider how contemporary belief structures such as astrology amongst internet culture, might influence and guide relationships whilst inspiring to construct identities surrouding the blurring of fictional and non-fictional narratives.

Our attitudes towards intimacy is also important and ways in which we might seek comfort and security. This is informed by considering human desires in relation to various heterotpian spaces, a philosophical term coined by Michel Foucault. How might these spaces encourage a form of escapism or confinement when considering the role of order and behaviour?

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
