ABOUT:

I am an expressionist – abstract painter who specialises in using acrylic paints and oil pastel to create playful yet evocative pieces with an emphasis on texture and colour. After being continually dissatisfied with the quality of my work throughout my first two years as a university student i experienced a period of severe burnout where she stopped creating all together. In an attempt to reignite my passion i vowed to stop creating art for other people and began creating art which was a genuine reflection of myself. During this period, I was fascinated by the idea of reductionism and I used that interest to create small black and white drawing which evolved into larger textural paintings. My practice takes the concept of abstraction very literal – I split the subjects up into smaller segments that are visually distinct but still form a cohesive image which reflect my fascination with the binary between abstraction and figuration. I want to use my work as a bridge between the two concepts to persuade people that ‘abstract art is true art’ and allow those outside of the contemporary art world to view abstract art through an analytical lens rather than one that is purely reactionary.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
