Discipline:

Curator, Artist, Researcher, Writer, Participatory Learning Facilitator, Creative project leader

Location:

East Midlands

ABOUT:

I am interested in the construction of individual and cultural identities, their constant recalibration and mediation through objects.

My work focusses on supporting women’s mental health, my ‘Motherlines’ project is inspired by women’s experiences of childbirth and motherhood.
My creative practise spans individual work as an artist, curator and writer and includes collaborative projects and creative project management. My approach is informed by a background in psychotherapy and museums and my experience as a working-class feminist. I am founder/co-director of Common Threads creative arts and health organisation; artist in residence at the Beeches Perinatal Unit, Derby Royal Hospital; researching for an AHRC-funded PhD exploring the role of museums in supporting mental health through a partnership between the School of Museum Studies, Leicester University and the Holburne Museum, Bath.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
