ABOUT:

Joana is a Spanish artist based in the U.K since 1993. She is also a mother and works part time as a Veterinary Surgeon. She describes her practice as one of “Doing and Making Stuff”. Anything internal or external can be a source of inspiration and the medium used will be dictated by what “feels right” at the time. However, there is often an performative element in the work whether this is seen or not. The themes underlying the works often have layers of meaning, varying from the simplicity of the pleasure of making marks on paper with a pencil to contemplations on existence, language, gender and privilege.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
