ABOUT:
I am a multidisciplinary artist, my practice is rooted in a connection with handmaking, process and found material. My work explores how the slow making can be an alternative to patriarchal and capitalist structures while exploring themes of labour and class. Recently, I have worked primarily with textiles, exploring the mediums potential for installation. Drawing reference from quilts, protest banners, ceremonial and historical textiles. My engagement with needle craft allows me to connect myself, as a woman, to a rich history of making and skilled work. It allows me to take ownership of my time, care, and labour; and connect with my body on my own terms.
Using found materials and everyday items is not only a way to align my practice with my environmental ethos, but it also allows me to play with the idea of collective memory. I see the cultural resonance of an item as part of my material, and using this familiarity is a tool for connection and play.
My current research has been based in environmental ethics; particularly how western anthropocentrism has impacted biodiversity. Investigating the way that our relationship with the natural world is shaped by animal representation in media and domestic items, I have identified methods for portraying animals in a biocentric manner. With the hope of sparking curiosity and encouraging meaningful connection with nature; for the sake of all living things.
