Discipline:

Artist, Curator, Designer

Location:

South London

ABOUT:

Mya is a Chicago-raised, London-based artist and curator whose work delves into the intersections of "Black movement." She explores movement beyond the physical body, encompassing migration, dance, archives, spatiality, and sound. Her body of work examines the relationships between the foundations of dance music, raving as a cultural practice, and visual culture, centering the Black American experience within an international context.

Currently featured in the 2024 New Contemporaries selection alongside Edith Liben, they challenge conventional ideas about dance, asserting, "We believe if you have a body, you are a dancer." Through subculture as a tool, they forge new community spaces for movement, play, and experimentation across workshops, publications, and exhibitions.

In addition, Mya curates programming for MOVEMENT! at SET Social Peckham, creating an inclusive space for dancers, ex dancers, non-dancers, and anyone interested in engaging with their body.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
