Richard maguire

Discipline:

Multi disciplinary artist

Location:

Aberdeenshire

ABOUT:

Influenced by historians of colonialism or racialised subjectivities he produces small-scale drawings that reproduce cropped elements, superimpositions, unedited photographs, and printed reproductions of archival images in a mimetic fashion. These works are often displayed alongside other small-scale reproductions of objects or images that construct narratives through the prising together of seemingly unrelated images. At stake within his projects is the restructuring of histories forgotten, distorted, or unnaturally fissured from conceptions and iterations of knowledge by colonialism or historical violence. He is particularly interested in archives and where hermeneutics of race and sexuality converge.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
