Discipline:

Multidisciplinary Artist

Location:

North Shields / Newcastle upon Tyne

ABOUT:

Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Sofia Barton is a multidisciplinary artist whose work weaves together a vibrant tapestry of Punjabi heritage, disability identity, and neurodivergent experience. By blending the intricate patterns of Phulkari, Truck Art and traditional Punjabi aesthetics with the industrial character of the North East, she creates a visual dialogue that reclaims "hidden histories" and centres the South Asian diaspora within the British landscape. As an artist living with disability and ADHD, Sofia embraces a maximalist, high-energy aesthetic, viewing her practice as being always in flux- a state of constant evolution that mirrors her neurodivergence and the shifting nature of identity. Her work is a radical assertion of space and visibility, transforming public environments into inclusive sanctuaries where the intersections of race, accessibility, and fluid creative energy are celebrated as essential, powerful components of the contemporary human story.

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
